The Sugar BowlWillow Creek Stories
Behind the stories

The record,
and the imagination.

Reading fiction alongside the record

These five stories follow the Sugar Bowl from 1878 to 1956. Their narrator, Judson Thursby, is invented. All dialogue is invented. Named people, events, measurements, printed notices and quotations draw on a newspaper research corpus, with the individual distinctions recorded in each “What is real?” companion.

Jim’s editorial statement is that the quotations were checked against newspaper scans. The companions retain their more specific distinctions between scan-read material and archive OCR, including partial coverage and cautions. Publishing these texts is not a new independent verification of the underlying evidence.

The newspapers

The underlying material also includes newspaper-printed deeds, mortgages, mining and water claims, jury reporting, wills, a tax sale and a land patent. Reverend S. G. Gilman’s 1938 wedding reminiscence and the Advocate’s 1897 and 1900 reminiscences are identified in the relevant companions.

The newspaper collection is hosted by the California Digital Newspaper Collection at UC Riverside. On this site, every linked article ID comes directly from a companion file and leads to that exact CDNC article record. The notes are the place to assess what an article supports.

About this edition

This site contains the complete text of five stories and their full “What is real?” companions. It does not publish the full research corpus or an archive of collected transcripts.

The initial edition was compared with the four supplied Claude artifacts. This updated edition reproduces the writer’s confirmed canonical manuscripts, including the fifth story, Through the Ranch. The original Markdown manuscripts and companion files are preserved as downloadable, unchanged source snapshots. The web edition adds navigation, readable formatting and source links. References to other stories outside this five-part edition remain in the companion text.

This edition includes completed v4 narrations for all five stories, supplied by the story editor. The narrator’s voice is generated with ElevenLabs eleven_v4, voice David. The web recordings omit the optional theme music. Larger recordings are presented as sequential MP3 tracks; their encoded speech is copied without re-encoding.
